Senior Honors Research Symposium 2022
13 Senior Honors Student: Jennika Villard Faculty Mentor: Dr. Peijia Zha The Lack of Trust in Healthcare Trust, an important aspect in healthcare, greatly impacts a nurse’s ability to form mean- ingful rela Ɵ onships with pa Ɵ ents and develops posi Ɵ ve pa Ɵ ent outcomes. Although this is true, implicit biases exist in healthcare which in turn weakens the trus Ɵ ng rela Ɵ onship and quality of healthcare. This literature review focuses on the phenomenon of trust— the factors that weaken the trus Ɵ ng rela Ɵ onship, possible tools to measure trust, and the integra Ɵ on of trust measuring tool and trust building strategies into the nursing edu- ca Ɵ on. Studies show successful trust measuring tools and strategies implemented in the healthcare se ƫ ng, however, the issue lies in the absence of integra Ɵ on of trust building strategies in the nursing educa Ɵ on. In conduc Ɵ ng literature search, the databases used were: CINAHL, EBSCOhost, and PubMed. Key words used were “measuring trust” “building trust” “trus Ɵ ng scale” “trust strategies” AND “nursing” “healthcare.” The re- sults were limited to full text peer reviewed ar Ɵ cles within current fi ve to seven years. In summary, many ar Ɵ cles shared similar concepts of how trust in the nurse-pa Ɵ ent rela- Ɵ onship promotes pa Ɵ ent engagement, pa Ɵ ent sa Ɵ sfac Ɵ on, and higher quality of life. Trust was measured using the Trust in Nurses Scale. This form of data collec Ɵ on was proven to be useful in evalua Ɵ ng/measuring the level of trust pa Ɵ ents had in healthcare professionals. Nursing is the most trusted profession as it has high ra Ɵ ngs of honesty and ethical standards, which is why it is important for future nurses to learn how to fos- ter trust with pa Ɵ ents. It was discovered that di ff erences in beliefs/values and percep- Ɵ ons, as well as implicit cultural biases impede the trus Ɵ ng rela Ɵ onship between pa- Ɵ ents and healthcare professionals. Moreover, based on literature review, trust strate- gies can be implemented in nursing educa Ɵ on, including the promo Ɵ on of pa Ɵ ent- oriented care. Themes of honesty, communica Ɵ on, and cultural competence emerged in a conducted study that proved to be e ff ec Ɵ ve strategies to promote trust. The ASC-DOC Trust Model, a func Ɵ onal framework, serves as a reference for healthcare faculty and learners to build trus Ɵ ng rela Ɵ onships that consistently measures competency in as- sessing and building trust. Although there are suggested tools and strategies to help build trust, there is a clear gap in literature that is not addressed in nursing educa Ɵ on. Part of the nursing program’s focus should be on the concept of building trust. The ASC- DOC Trust Model, along with the Trust in Nurses Scale and trust building strategies such as building cultural competence and providing pa Ɵ ent-oriented care can be integrated in nursing educa Ɵ on. These tools and strategies can be adopted into nursing educa Ɵ on through simula Ɵ ons, clinical shadowing, or even case studies and role play in the class- room. Keywords: trust, measuring tool, rela Ɵ onship, nursing educa Ɵ on
